How Should I Store Tires Seasonally?

When swapping tires for the season, store them in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight and heat sources. Stack them flat and cover them with bags to keep dust off. Proper storage prevents damage and keeps them ready for next use.

Storing tires properly protects them from damage and keeps them ready to go for when you need them again. Whether switching from summer to winter sets, good storage prevents cracking, flat spots, or weakening that could shorten their life. It’s straightforward and doesn’t take much space or effort.

First, clean the tires thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove road grime, salt, or brake dust and let them dry completely. Store in a cool, dry place like a garage or basement, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or ozone-producing items like electric motors. Ideal temperatures are between 40°F and 75°F to avoid rubber degradation.

If tires are off the rims, stack them horizontally or stand them upright; don’t hang them as it can distort the shape. For mounted tires, inflate to recommended. Wrap each in opaque bags or covers to block light and moisture, heavy-duty garbage bags work well if sealed airtight.
Check on them occasionally, and label by position for easy reinstall. This way, they stay in great shape, saving you from early replacements.
